Setting goals is one thing which you need for succeeding in life. New year always come with new hopes and new resolutions. Tapping that new enthusiasm to accomplish what you want in life helps you in gaining success.
Without goals, our life drifts like the leaf in the air. This leaf goes wherever the wind takes it. If we tie a small pebble to it and throw it, it will go in the direction in which we throw it. Here pebble is the goal. And leaf reaches either its destination or near to the destination. Same is our life with goals.
Why goal setting is important ?
Setting realistic goals is important to accomplish anything in life. All successful people set goals and work hard to achieve them. Resolutions which are not written never become achievable. If you cannot remember your goals daily, you get to forget them in day to day tasks of daily life.
Set goal with a time bound to it. Time bound goals are easy to accomplish as you feel an urgency to accomplish that in given time. If you don’t set time for that, your mind start feeling that you have all the time to work on that specific goal and you don’t feel any urgency to accomplish that.

1. Identify your goals
The preliminary task in setting goals is to identify them . What you want to accomplish in this particular year ? To identify your goals, you need to ask yourself some questions
- Why these goals are important for me ?
- Will they improve my life ?
- How I will improve with these?
- What impact these goals will have on me ?
- What I will learn reaching the goals?
It is not the goal in itself which gives you happiness but the journey of reaching the goal will make you happy and content. Having goals with values will take you on the path of success. The ultimate goal for everything you do is getting happiness. But what if your happiness get lost in the pursuit of achieving goals ?
2. Introspect your last year
Introspecting your last year helps you in having an idea on where you fell short in terms of achievements. This will let you make any changes required to reach nearer to your goals. Stopping and analysing where you went wrong is like slowing down at speed breakers.
It gives you time to think about any changes you need to make in your journey.
3. Keep your goals SMART
Yes setting SMART goals keep you on the track of attainable goals. Mere setting a huge goals which seems to be unrealistic will not motivate you to take action. You may start procrastinate the particular tasks. But if you will set goals which seems to be reachable, taking action will be easy. I use this planner to set my goals .
S Specific : Specific goals gives you clarity and vision to undertake those tasks that will help in steering you towards success. A vague goal may not motivate you to work daily. A well defined goal will inspire you to wake up daily with a plan to work on it daily.
“I will loose wight this year” is a vague goal’
Where , how, what you will do to loose wight will give specific dimensions to your weight loss goal.
M Measurable : A measurable goal is what you can measure in terms of how much and how many. Or in simple words you know the magnitude of goal.
I will loose wight this year is not measurable. I will loose 20 pounds is measurable. You know the end result.
A Achievable, Attainable : Goals which seems to be possible but you have to push your self to come out of your comfort zone are achievable goals.
R Relevant , Realistic: Goals must relevant to you and your needs. It depends on what you want in your life. And also goals should be realistic.
T Time bound, tangible : Goal should be time bound. If you think that you have all the time to accomplish your goal, you may not be prompted to work towards its completion. But if you have a time limit, you will be urged to accomplish your goal.
4. Use positive words to set goals
Always use positive words to set your goals. Goals with a positive sentiment always work better. Instead of ‘ I will not eat chips for one week ‘ say ‘ I will eat nuts as snacks’ is much better. It is said that our subconscious mind cannot understand ‘No’. It works by visualising the image of the task.
If you say ‘I will not eat chips’, your subconscious will delete the ‘Not’ and your urge to eat chips will remain same. Setting positive goals takes you on the journey of achievements and success.
5. Set motivating goals
Goals should be very personal to you and your own self. Goals should be important to you and your self. The thought of outcome should motivate you to embark on the journey and take little steps daily to reach the final destination.
If you sit with eyes closed, think about the outcome of that particular goal, it should motivate you to take action now. This kind of goal will really help you in your pursuit of happiness.
6. Write down your goals
As we all know, writing your goals make them concrete and tangible. It becomes easy to work on goals when you can see them daily. Written goals are easy to plan and take action. 7. Make action plan for goals and stick to it

Never leave this exercise of feeling about your goals. Whenever you sit to set goals for your life, be mindful about how you feel when you think of accomplishing it. If you feel happy about your goal, it means the outcome is really important to you and your life.
11. Be optimistic about your goals
Be optimistic even if you feel like you are not reaching your milestones. You may be just few steps behind your goals. You may reach after few more steps or by making few changes.
12. Create goals for different areas of life
Creating goals for your every aspect of life is so important because if you neglect any area of life, it may keep you unhappy. This on is my favourite. I love to reward myself at every small accomplishment. If you attach a reward with achievement, you will be more inclined to accomplish your tasks and goals. For me, after writing a blog post, it is a cup of tea. I love my tea. The aroma of tea urges me to write fast and complete your post.
